The Alliance for New Music-Theatre, under the direction of Artistic Director Susan Galbraith, presented a section of Vaclav Havel’s PROTEST, for a panel on Havel, featuring former US Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright, and former Ambassador for the Czech Republic, Martin Poluch, at the Crosscurrents festival in Washington, D.C., this month. The theme of the Crosscurrents Festival is “humanizing politics through performance,” a goal expressed variously and often movingly by theater makers from around the world.
We originally contracted to perform PROTEST in 2017 as a one-night offering at the invitation of the Embassy of the Czech Republic, in DC, but it has since become part of an ongoing work, which we’re now calling “The Havel Project.” So far, We’ve performed in D.C., NYC, Prague, and Miami, and anticipate performing in Los Angeles and San Francisco, in the fall, in celebration of the thirtieth anniversary of The Velvet Revolution. We’re working on a film adaptation, which we hope to film in 2020.
Havel has already brought us unexpected adventures and we’re looking forward to more.
