About
A short time after turning 40-ish, David threw aside tamer pursuits and returned to the wild first love of his youth: American theater. He dove into classes and began acting in the vibrant small theater and independent film scenes of Portland, Oregon. Then, after training with Shakespeare & Co., in Lenox, Massachusetts, he earned his MFA under Jack Young at The University of Houston Professional Actor Training Program, which emphasizes skills for both classical and contemporary stage.
Soon after graduating, David packed up his new bag of tools, moved east, and has been playing meaty roles ever since, including Henry IV, Malvolio, Titus Andronicus, James Tyrone Jr., and Richard Nixon. He’s worked in regional, Philadelphia, and NYC theaters, such as The Springer Opera House, Wayside Theatre, The Arden Theatre Co., The Walnut Street Theatre, The Oklahoma Shakespearean Festival, and The Modern Stage. Soon, he’ll be in residence full-time at The American Shakespeare Center, performing in the 2012-13 Tempt Me Further national tour of Loves’ Labors Lost, Twelfth Night, The Duchess of Malfi, and A Christmas Carol.
Before becoming an actor, David taught English, wrote journalism, and once aspired to being an academic philosopher, which would have been awful. When not acting, he can be found hiking, motorcycling, diving, or skiing, and returns often to Portland and Houston for work and play. He’s also at work on a screenplay and relishing more and more opportunities to act on camera, in both film and television. In the new golden age of television, especially, David sees theater traditions finding new expression in ways that reinvigorate theater in all its forms, live and on screen.
